Jesus says

When you read Mark’s gospel account, you’ll notice how often Jesus commands people to do one thing or another. Whether it’s his command to repent (Mark 1:15), follow me (Mark 1:17), do not be afraid (Mark 5:36), or to proclaim the gospel (Mark 16:15)—we see that Mark’s account of Jesus’ public ministry is meant to demonstrate that Jesus Christ is the authoritative, miracle-working Son of God. And yet, Mark develops his narrative of the authority of Jesus to show that no one takes Jesus’ life from him; he gave it willingly, knowing that according to God’s plan there was no other way for us to be saved. The price of redemption must be paid, and the God-man must give his life as a sacrifice and shed his blood for others. He came not to be a powerful national deliverer but a suffering Savior. He came to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45). How do we respond to this? The nature of true discipleship involves denying oneself and taking up our cross to follow him (Mark 8:34). Mark’s gospel even spends a great deal of time focusing on the disciples’ failure to understand the significance of what Jesus says and even highlighting at times how they reject what he says. Mark organizes his narrative to show the contrast between the masterful, commanding Jesus on one hand—and the much weaker, less comprehending disciples on the one hand. Therefore, faithful discipleship involves first coming to terms with the death of Jesus on the cross as our sinless substitute so that we may be forgiven and enter into his kingdom and then bringing our entire lives under his commanding authority; listening to what he says and following him, unashamed an unafraid.
